All models are completely safe for outdoor use. All models have a flame and as such need to be kept certain distances away from combustible materials.
What are combustible materials ? Things that can burn, drywall, wood, screening are common examples found in the typical patio heater environment.

Above: For optimum safety, allow 3 feet between the top of the heater and a combustible roof. Never place a full height traditional patio heater within 3 feet of a combustible ceiling or you will cause, discoloring, then damage and if left unattended a fire.
Sides: For optimum safety, allow 2 feet from either side of the heater to the closest combustible material.
Behind: For optimum safety, allow 2 feet between the back of the heater and the closest combustible material.
Front: For optimum safety, allow 2 feet between the front of a patio heater and the closest combustible material and 4 feet and 6 feet respectively for the 12-IR and 24-IRP heaters as they direct all of their heat in one direction.
